Wow, this picture makes me feel so many things when I look at it. Even when I first saw nes11's 'Leo' it touched something in me, who knows what, but I just had to try it. Even if that ment screwing up with a background.
So here's my first background ever So give me some critique, what did I do wrong, right? But I say I did a pretty good job, I donno, I think this is probably my most favorite drawing I've ever done. Maybe someone thinks it's not all that. But I donno, it's peaceful to me. Enjoy! ref.pic from:Nes11 Comments
wow, the bg is incredible. the fencing is so realistic looking, and the horses shadow over the foreground fencing really brings the drawing out. I like how you made the very back nice and suttle, as not not detract from the main subject (the horse). the horse looks great also, but i think ida made his jowl smaller or his neck a bit wider at the base of his throat, but it in no way detracts from this piece. this is probably one of your best pieces i have seen in a while. props.
-- Member of: a lot of things. The fact that no one understands you doesn't make you an artist. - Unknown Well, you did pretty well. The horse overall looks very nice.. the contour is strong and good. On your value I would just work on softening it up to give the horse more of a gleam. The mane could use some work, too. If there's something behind the mane then you can use a contour line to guide your value, but when there's not it's best to start at the roots of the mane and curve them in a general direction of the reference to hide the line and make it look more like hair.
The fence by the horse is very very good. It definetly creates the illusion of realness, but the other fences pales in comparison. Bring out the fence to the right of the horse a little more. Your grass seems the most rushed. It looks as though you flattened the edge of the pencil and just scraped it along the paper. I recently did a piece with grass in it. Being that the grass was far away, I did not have to worry about single blades. What I did was took a B(or bolder) pencil and worked in a circular motion over the grass area. After I had laid a 'base coat', I went back in and darkened the areas of grass in regular places, fading out as I got further away. This created a cool illusion of grass. The tree looks to be the place where you got frustrated. I personally hate drawing trees, but a friend of mine has a good idea for it. When he draws leaves, he makes outlines of them. No colored in ones, but just the outline. It could even be made in one continuous line. Once all the leaves were in he would shade over them lightly, giving just a few of them detail. This created a beautiful illusion though it took some time. I think you're very good and can only get better with time and practice! Great work! -- "DO YOU WANT TO CUDDLE?!"
